VOCALCULARY STRAIN AS A CAUSE OF HOARESS
Hoarseness is the most common occupational disease
Hoarseness is sometimes called an occupational disease – it often occurs in musicians, lecturers, actors, as well as lecturers and teachers. It is caused by many hours of speaking, clearing your throat, singing loudly, too dry air and noise, in other words – straining the throat and larynx. Lack of preparation in the field of proper voice emission also contributes to this. Such a condition can lead to a voicelessness, which is fortunately temporary. In such a situation, only not using the voice for some time helps.

In the “demonstration version”, hoarseness as a similar symptom appears in fans or concert goers who strained their throats for many hours by shouting and singing loudly. In such cases, this symptom also passes quite quickly – hoarseness gradually disappears within a dozen or so hours to a maximum of a few days.
How to take care of your vocal cords
- Moisturize your vocal cords (drink plenty of water, herbal teas).
- Limit the amount of coffee, black tea and alcohol, which dry out the vocal cords.
- Prevent upper respiratory tract infections if possible.
- Maintain the correct humidity in the room: air the rooms and use humidifiers. The vocal apparatus functions best at a temperature of around 21℃. In turn, air humidity should oscillate around 60%.
- Do breathing exercises. Full, deep breathing, i.e. diaphragmatic-rib breathing, during which our ribs spread outwards and the chest gently to the sides, is the healthiest.
- Breathe through your nose. The inhaled air is naturally moisturized and cleansed in the nose. While speaking, we take in air very quickly through our mouths, which bypasses the natural path of protection, drying out the mucous membrane. The consequence is greater susceptibility to various types of upper respiratory tract infections.
- In the course of severe respiratory tract infections (especially laryngitis), in addition to pharmacotherapy, do not strain your voice (do not speak too much, avoid speaking in noisy environments, take care of rest and hydration).
