To start treating hoarseness, you need to know its cause. Treating the cause is the best way to eliminate this problem. Hoarseness can be relieved and cured by avoiding excessive use of the voice. However, this may not be enough.

The treatment of hoarseness depends on the cause:

  • Acute laryngitis caused by an upper respiratory tract infection usually goes away on its own as the body fights off the infection. Conservative treatment with cough suppressants and humidification can help. In all cases, voice rest is recommended to avoid further irritation or injury to the vocal cords.
  • Smokers are advised to stop smoking.
  • People with hoarseness caused by overuse or improper use of the voice should take care of voice rest, as serious injury can occur.
  • In some cases, surgery may be necessary (e.g. in the case of benign nodules or polyps, trauma to the larynx or vocal cords, and laryngeal cancer).

Home remedies for hoarseness

  • Emergency help primarily involves alleviating the course of hoarseness and supporting the affected area.
  • Avoid situations that require excessive, strenuous use of the voice.
  • Stop smoking, avoid alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods.
  • People with hoarseness caused by gastroesophageal reflux may benefit from dietary modifications.
  • Cold drinks can irritate the vocal cords, so they are not recommended for hoarseness.
  • Products that gently reduce irritation of the vocal cords, such as linseed, will help with hoarseness.
  • Infusions of sage, chamomile or mint help alleviate inflammation of the oral cavity.
  • It is worth remembering to humidify and air the rooms in which you are staying.

To support the regeneration of the vocal cords, you can use hoarseness preparations, available over the counter at the pharmacy. They contain coating ingredients, which, on the one hand, soothe irritations and help moisturize the throat, and on the other hand, support the renewal and regeneration of the upper respiratory tract mucosa.
